I had my first article published in print this month, in ‘The Word’, a popular Vietnamese English language magazine.

Follow this link for a PDF copy of the magazine:

My article is called ‘Salary Gap’and is listed on the contents page, under national.

Very exciting!

Exchange rate as follows –

33,000 Vietnamese Dong to 1 British pound

21,000 Vietnamese Dong to 1 American dollar

Great article 🙂 Enjoyed reading that. It’s a touchy subject with teachers here too – I’ve got friends that were told to keep their salaries quite because it’s much higher than the locals. Think the key point you brought up is all about the image, parents love to see the native even though a vietnamese (or other nationality) teacher might well have a much srtronger grasp of things like grammar rules etc etc

Thanks for the comment Will. Yes, it’s a bit of a touchy subject. You wouldn’t get away with the blatant request for a certain colour of skin in most countries! But here, it is normal… I completely understand that native speakers are often more adept at speaking English than Vietnamese teachers but I don’t know if it justifies the huge difference in salary? It’s an interesting topic and I wonder if it will change as time goes on…
